Janelle Monáe has been coy about her sexuality throughout her career, but before releasing her latest album Dirty Computer later this week, she has some rumors to clear up.
The singer and auteur sat down with Rolling Stonefor an expansive interview about her life, her record label, and the music making process — and confirmed that all those hints about her sexuality in songs like "Mushrooms & Roses" and "Q.U.E.E.N." were intentional.

Monáe clarified that she identified as bisexual at first before learning and connecting to pansexuality. But all throughout this discovery, she explained that she is continually "open to learning more about who I am."
"I want young girls, young boys, nonbinary, gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you," she explained. "This album is for you. Be proud."
Over the past few months, Monáe has been romantically linked to actress Tessa Thompson, and to the dismay of some fans, that rumor wasn't clarified — though her coming out in general sparked love and support from those on Twitter.
