As covered on the docu-series, 17-year-old Brendan Dassey was found guilty of sexual assault and first-degree murder after he allegedly assisted his uncle, Steven Avery, in the rape and murder of Teresa Halbach.。

Though no physical evidence linked him to the crimes, Dassey admitted to police in 2005 that he helped. In 2016, the conviction was overturned after a judge determined that Dassey's confession was coerced by police. 。
As BuzzFeed reported in 2017, initially, a panel of three judges sustained the appeal. However, as BuzzFeed wrote, a "larger appeals panel ruled 4–3 that police had acted properly during Dassey's confession, and his words could be used against him in court."。

The now 28-year-old's attorneys attempted to bring the case to the Supreme Court, but the court rejected to hear the plea on Monday. 。
