Dassey was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison. Though no physical evidence linked him to the crimes, Dassey admitted to police in 2005 that he helped. In 2016, the conviction was overturned after a judge determined that Dassey's confession was coerced by police.。

As BuzzFeed reported in 2017, initially, a panel of three judges sustained the appeal. However, as BuzzFeed wrote, a "larger appeals panel ruled 4–3 that police had acted properly during Dassey's confession, and his words could be used against him in court."
