If you're going to use metaphors that involve well-loved superheroes, you'd better be prepared for them to strike back.

This was something UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson discovered on Sunday after he made the mistake of comparing Britain leaving the EU with the Incredible Hulk breaking free of his restraints.

"[Bruce] Banner might be bound in manacles, but when provoked he would explode out of them," Johnson told the Mail. "Hulk always escaped, no matter how tightly bound in he seemed to be — and that is the case for this country. We will come out on October 31 and we will get it done."

Bold words indeed. But what he didn't count on was getting shut down by the Hulk himself, Mark Ruffalo, who played Banner in the Avengersseries.

"The Hulk works best when he is in unison with a team, and is a disaster when he is alone."

Yep: Ruffalo just completely turned that metaphor around on Johnson in a tweet that's now been shared over 25,000 times.

That's just one more embarrassing development for Johnson to deal with as he travels to Luxembourg to negotiate with the EU today.
