Is Apple still working, as once rumored, on integrating a fingerprint scanner into the screens of its phones, or does the company plan to put Face ID in all future iPhones?

According to a report from usually accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, via 9to5Mac, Apple hasn't really decided yet.

If the user response to iPhoneX's Face ID is positive, the report claims, Apple will likely add the technology to all 2018 models. If it "fails to impress consumers," the company will probably resume its efforts to embed Touch ID into iPhone screens.

It's definitely possible to place a fingerprint scanner into a phone screen -- Vivo and Qualcomm demonstrated their take on this technology back in June. But Kuo claims that Apple is having trouble embedding the fingerprint scanner into the screens of its iPhones due to its 3D Touch technology, which makes the display panel thicker, reducing the accuracy of a fingerprint scanner placed under the display.

This might be a tough call for Apple. The company put a lot of effort into convincing the world that its face scanning technology is perfect, but numerous rumors claimed Apple had desperately tried to launch the iPhone X with an under-the-display fingerprint scanner, with Face ID being a last-minute replacement. If real-world use shows that Face ID isn't all that great, it could be back to the drawing board for Apple.

The iPhone X is scheduled to start shipping to customers on Nov. 3, but rumors claim the phone is in very short supply, meaning that most users won't get it until 2018.
