Move over TikTok, there’s a new mobile app king in town.
Zoomjust blew away all mobile app download records with its iOS app.
The video-conferencing giant, which has seen exponential growth during the coronavirus pandemic, broke the record for the most App Store downloads in a single quarter. Zoom on iOS received almost 94 million downloads from April 1 to June 30, according to a Q2 data report from mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower.
Zoom downloads came largely from India, where users installed the app 68 million times, and the U.S., with 41 million.
This astounding number blew the previous record holder, TikTok, out of the water. The video-sharing platform, a favorite among young Millennials and Gen Z, earned the record just the previous quarter with 67 million iOS downloads.
Both of these records are impressive on their own, as Sensor Tower points out that no non-game mobile app has ever surpassed 50 million in a quarter. This puts Zoom and TikTok in a league of their own. In fact, if Zoom hadn’t blasted past TikTok’s record, TikTok would have broken its own record. The app was downloaded nearly 71 million times in the App Store in Q2.
Counting mobile games, and Google Play and App Store downloads, Zoom now joins TikTok and Pokémon GOin an elite club. Those three are the only mobile apps to hit more than 300 million downloads in a single quarter.
Sensor Tower also found another shattered record. Overall, total worldwide app downloads reached an “all-time high” in Q2 with 37.8 billion downloads. Apple’s App Store accounted for 9.1 billion downloads, whereas Google Play made up 28.7 billion. That’s a lot of apps.
Also, for the first time, Google's apps surpassed Facebook's apps in total downloads in its own app store, Google Play.
The coronavirus pandemic has clearly made its mark on the mobile app industry. TikTok has become a major entertainment platform for young people (and not so young people!) looking for something to do while stuck inside, while Zoom is now a household name thanks to the fact that so many people are working from home.
