UPDATE: June 24, 2020, 12:03 p.m. UTC Tesla's Cybertruck will be available for museum viewing for an extra week. The museum announced Tuesday the exhibit would be extended through July 5. The cyberpunk electric pickup prototype was initially supposed to be on display for only a week until June 27.
The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles reopened its doors on June 19 and visitors were treated to an up-close taste of our electric car future.
Tesla's Cybertruck is on display at the museum for a full week, until June 27. And while you'll probably be tackled and arrested if you try to hit it with a sledgehammer, it's set up in a public space that allows for closer looks than most people on the planet have been able to get at this point.
The Cybertruck's presence ties into the museum's ongoing "Alternating Currents" exhibit, which explores "the fall and rise of electric vehicles." In addition to the Cybertruck, visitors can also check out Tesla's Model S prototype as well as a Roadster.
Of course, the fact that we're still in the middle of a global pandemic means you should expect some precautions to be taken. The museum is observing social distancing guidelines that require visiting groups to stay at least six feet away from anyone else. Face coverings are also a requirement, and the museum will give you a mask if you show up without one.
It's probably a good idea for you to be careful generally around what may be a crowded exhibit. The Cybertruck is a bit of an oddity with its stainless steel body and unusual shape. In fact, you might want to just skip the exhibit all together and enjoy it vicariously through other visitors' photos and video.
That's true for those of us who live outside southern California as well; we can't visit, but we can look! It's been a day since the exhibit opened and there are already plenty of opportunities to see Tesla's electric truck from fresh angles.
Production is expected to get going on the Tesla Cybertruck sometime in 2021.
