India will soon beat Australia to house the world's biggest cricket stadium.

The Sardar Patel Stadium in Gujarat state is being rebuilt to seat 110,000 people. It will surpass the 90,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground on completion, the Press Trust of Indiareported. The stadium could seat 54,000 before being razed down.

India houses some of the largest sports stadiums in the world.

Kolkata's Eden Gardens, an iconic cricket venue, could hold over 100,000 people before its 2011 upgrade that brought down the seating capacity by 40%. The same city is also home to a multi-sports venue, The Salt Lake Stadium, that can seat about 100,000.

The new facility in Ahmedabad would be spread across 63 acres and will take two years to be completed. It is being built by one of India's largest construction companies, Larsen & Toubro.

Meanwhile. Gujarat Cricket Association’s vice-president Parimal Nathwani took to social media to share a picture from the "stone-laying ceremony" on Monday.

“The stadium will have 76 corporate boxes, four dressing rooms, a club house and an Olympic-size swimming pool," he told PTI.

He even indicated that it could have a new name in the future.

Popularly known as Motera, this stadium was established in 1982 on a 50-acre land donated by the state government. It was renovated ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2006, when three new pitches and a new outfield were laid, and state of the art floodlights and covered stands were added, according to Cricinfo.

It has played host to 12 test matches and 24 one-day internationals since its inception. And is known for its placid, batsman-friendly tracks.
